Turkish ship construction has eight centuries of tradition. During the period of the Ottoman Empire, the shipyards could already build big, strong naval vessels and, following the foundation of the Republic of Turkey, the yards were modernised. The Turkish shipbuilding has developed since the beginning of 1990 from old traditional industry to an internationally recognised industry. The industry has advanced, quality certified shipyards which can build and manufacture large repair and conversion work for boats, yachts, mega-yachts and sailing boats. The Turkish shipyards, Tuzla, Yalova and lzmit, are mainly located in Marmara and have developed into dynamic centres of shipbuilding. While Turkish yards are traditionally specialised in yachts and smaller business vessels, their capacity and competitiveness in building larger ships have significantly increased in recent years.
